Flight Safety

Assessment of Possible Dangers

The camp organizers will focus maximally on safety. If necessary we will stop or limit the activity, if we find that the safety would otherwise be reduced to an unacceptably low level.

This does not relieve the individual pilot of his or her personal responsibility and duty to exhibit the very best airmanship. We have some thoughts about potential risks we want you to consider:

  • Mid-airs: The danger increases because of low contrast background.
  • Loss of control when flying low above the terrain.
  • Ridge soaring with varying wind conditions and high glider density.
  • Issues concerning winter operations like white out and icing.
  • Fogging and icing on the hood.
  • Strong turbulence created by wind and rotor.
  • Closing föhn gaps.
  • Physiological conditions caused by thin air and low temperatures.

Make sure you mentally prepare for these risks, so that you can always anticipate the proceedings of the flight. Do not let it be you who contribute to lowering the safety level.

Power Lines

A power line crosses the lake Vågåvann about 2 or 3km west of the airfield. The powerlines themselves are unmarked. There is also a power line close by Vågåmo at the northern shore of Vågåvann.

Emergency Equipment

A first aid kit, a mobile phone and fire extinguishers can be found at the launch point.

All pilots are responsible to bring along necessary equipment. The following equipment are reccomended in addition to standard equipment:

  • Extra warm clothes
  • Flares/strobelight/flashlight
  • A good map over the area (example roadmap "North part of southern Norway")
  • Handheld GPS with fresh batteries
  • Cellphone with fresh batteries
  • Extra food

Emergencies

An emergency may be transmitted on any frequency. If transmitted on the main Wavecamp frequence, ground control will co-ordinate communication. If a distress call is made, take-offs will be stopped and gliders not involved in the call should maintain radiosilence.

Outlanding on the mountain areas are dangerous and will be trated as an emergency.

All emergencies and incidents must be reported to the correct authoreties according to Norwegian legislation.
